The first all-female mariachi band is the subject of this compelling documentary.
Founded in 1994 by Mariachi legend, Jose Hernandez, the twelve members of the first all-female Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles shatter age-old stereotypes while expanding the popularity of mariachi music. In a culture and a musical tradition that has long been male-dominated, these women are true pioneers, literally giving voice to Latinas. The film alternates between captivating performances, behind-the-scenes drama and the gender conflict and prejudice that undermines the ultimate success of these brave role models.
Directors/producers, Elizabeth Massie, Matthew Buzzell and producer, Celia Zaentz will be in attendance. Documentary. USA. 59m. Screens with Una Causa Noble.
