An aging rancher takes a group of young boys on a cattle drive that proves to be the adventure of a lifetime.
Directed by Mark Rydell (On Golden Pond), and starring John Wayne in one of his last and arguably best performances, The Cowboys also marked the feature film debut of local film editor Neil Travis and actor, Robert Carradine (Revenge of the Nerds, Lizzie McGuire.) Meet Mark Rydell, Robert Carradine and Neil Travis at the pre-screening reception and hear stories about the making of this wonderful film, suitable for all ages, at the screening at the first annual Western Night in Paso.
When his cattle drivers abandon him for the gold fields, rancher Wil Andersen needs to do something quickly in order to avoid financial disaster. He decides to visit the local school and take on a collection of young boys as his drivers (young Robert Carradine playing the oldest boy, Slim Honeycutt.) With the trail cook as his only adult helper, Wil leads the boys through a series of adventures and misadventures, where before long they learn about mans work and some of mans vices. Neither Andersen nor the boys could know, however, that a gang of cattle thieves is stalking them, which ultimately teaches the boys a lesson about mans inhumanity. Drama/Western. USA. 2 hrs. 11 m.
