Escape from Luanda
Sponsored by Pat McKeague

Saturday, March 8 — 2:30pm La Perla Del Mar

SLOIFFDespite the ravages of 27 years of civil war, three determined musical students prove that musical passion can overcome terrible hardships.

In Luanda, one of the world’s poorest and most dangerous places, three students from Angola’s only music school work towards their end-of-year concert. The Music School is Angola’s first and only school of its kind. It houses some 80 students, most of them desperately poor. Many face disapproval and outright rejection from their families who can’t see a future in music. Meet Joana, 23, a mother of two, who struggles to become Angola’s first female rock drummer; Domingas, 42, mother of five and the oldest student at the school; and Alfredo, 21, perhaps the most likely to succeed as he faces new obstacles in achieving his aim of becoming Angola’s first-ever classical pianist. Documentary. United Kingdom/Angola. 1 hr. 12 m. Screens with 7500 Miles to Redemption.
