A mother sacrifices more than she should to secure her daughter’s happiness.

Working-class Stella Martin (Barbara Stanwyck) marries wealthy Stephen Dallas and soon they have a daughter named Laurel. Before too long, however, Stephen’s incessant demands on Stella to become something she isn’t, leads to their eventual separation. Stephen later marries Helen Morrison (his prior fiancée), and Stella’s daughter Laurel becomes the focus of her life and love. Nothing is too good for Laurel as far as Stella is concerned. Determined to give her all the advantages, she takes Laurel on a trip to an expensive resort where the child makes friends with ‘uppercrust’ kids. After an embarrassing incident, Stella realizes that her love and devotion may have not been the best thing for Laurel. A touching and bittersweet drama, with Oscar-nominated performances by Barbara Stanwyck and Anne Shirley. Drama. USA. 1 hr. 46 m.
