Surfing the 50s (1994)
Sponsored by Sycamore Minerals Springs, The Cliffs Resort, Denise Dudley & Kirk Perron

Thursday, March 13 7:30pm Fremont Theatre
Bud Brownes classic look at the early days of surfing: the great waves, the heroes, the camaraderie.
One day in early 1993, Bud Browne realized that he had a lot of pristine surf film on the shelf that no one had seen in more than thirty years. Knowing that it would be of value as a historical record of an important time in the early years of surfing, Bud decided to combine some of his best footage of the 1950s with highlights from eight of his films, including "The Big Surf" and "Cat on a Hot Foam Board". "Surfing the 50s" combined Buds original and often projected print film that had picked up scratches over the years giving it a rawness that is representative of the surf film style Bud pioneered. This film zeroes in on a time in history when brave young men joyously battled the best of the huge waves that Hawaii had to offer, when the boards were long and heavy, there were no leashes, wet suits or jet skis. Features many well-known surf pioneers including Buzzy Trent, Dewey Weber, George Downing, Walter and Flippy Hoffman, Phil Edwards and Mike Doyle with narration by John Kelly and Peter Cole. Gerry Lopez, Peter Cole, Fred Van Dyke, Joel Tudor, Jack McCoy, Linda Benson, Walter Hoffman, John Peck and Buzzy Trent's daughter, Anna Moore will be in attendance. And there won't be any shortage of Brown's! Last year's VIP's, Bruce, Dana and Wes Brown will also be here to celebrate the work of Bud Browne. Documentary. USA. 1 hr. 10 m.
A tribute to 95 -year old Bud Browne will follow the film with speeches, a Q & A with the surf legends in attendance and a raffle of some great items donated by local surf shops and others. Stay tuned for details.
