2009 George Sidney Independent Film Competition




This year the San Luis Obispo International Film Festival has expanded
our Film Competition to include 3 new categories:
High School (9-12), Middle School (7-8), and K-6 (Primary).

Student films will be judged by a panel of teachers, students, parents and SLOIFF board members. Films selected for screening at the SLOIFF will compete in the following categories:

All Age Levels (High School, Middle & Primary):

  • Best Short Feature (under 30 min.) - $50 cash prize
  • Best Short Film (under 5 min.) - $50 cash prize
  • Best SLO County Film* (any length) - $50 cash prize

Competition Rules

This competition is open to students from all over the world. * San Luis Obispo County residents are eligible for the Best SLO County Film award in three age levels. To win the filmmaker must be a student in a school in San Luis Obispo County or a homeschool student residing in SLO County.

Submissions in all categories must be received by January 15, 2009.
There is no entry fee for K-12 Student Film entries.

Films can be stories told with photographs, animation, live action, music videos, documentaries...anything goes. The subject matter is open to your imagination but please...keep it clean. Films should be able to be rated G or PG. Here are a few suggested themes and ideas to get you started:

A Day in the life of....
My Neighborhood
I'm Proud to be...
Your version of a fairy tale, book, TV show or movie

All music used should be fully credited at the end of the film. Films longer than 30 minutes will not be considered for screening at the SLOIFF.

The SLOIFF reserves the right to determine eligibility of any work submitted. All films submitted must have a completion date after March 1, 2008. Screening copies submitted must be on a Region 0 or 1 DVD in NTSC format. No PAL DVD's please. All submitted materials become property of the SLOIFF and will not be returned.

Films selected for screening at the Festival will be notified no later than January 30, 2009. All student filmmakers with films screening at the festival will be given one six-film pass to the 2009 SLOIFF, good from March 6-15, 2009.
