2009 George Sidney Independent Film Competition

This year the San Luis Obispo International Film Festival has expanded our Film Competition to include 3 new categories: High School (9-12), Middle School (7-8), and K-6 (Primary).

Student films will be judged by a panel of teachers, students, parents and SLOIFF board members. Films selected for screening at the SLOIFF will compete in the following categories:

All Age Levels (High School, Middle & Primary):

  • Best Film made by an individual
  • Best Film made by a group
  • Best SLO County Film*

Competition Rules

This competition is open to students from all over the world. * San Luis Obispo County residents are eligible for the Best SLO County Film award in three age levels. To win the filmmaker must be a student in a school in San Luis Obispo County or a homeschool student residing in SLO County.

Submissions in all categories must be received by January 15, 2010. There is no entry fee for K-12 Student Film entries. Films should be submitted through Withoutabox (link below).

Films can be stories told with photographs, animation, live action, music videos, documentaries...anything goes. The subject matter is open to your imagination but please...keep it clean. Films should be able to be rated G or PG. Here are a few suggested themes and ideas to get you started:

  • A Day in the life of....
  • My Neighborhood
  • I'm Proud to be...
  • Your version of a fairy tale, book, TV show or movie

All films must be a maximum of 10 minutes. Longer films will not be considered for screening at the SLOIFF. All music used should be fully credited at the end of the film.

The SLOIFF reserves the right to determine eligibility of any work submitted. All films submitted must have a completion date after March 1, 2009. Screening copies submitted must be on a Region 0 or 1 DVD in NTSC format. No PAL DVDs please. All submitted materials become property of the SLOIFF and will not be returned.

Films selected for screening at the Festival will be notified no later than January 30, 2010. All student filmmakers with films screening at the festival will be given one Movie Fanatic (six-film) pass, worth $50, to the 2010 SLOIFF, good from March 12-21, 2010.
