CENTRAL COAST FILMMAKER SHOWCASE

Presented by the City of San Luis Obispo

The SLOIFF is proud to showcase a variety of films by filmmakers who are from or currently in the counties of San Luis Obispo, Monterey and Santa Barbara. This competition has grown quickly, from three entries in 2007 to thirty this year. An accomplished jury selected the films that will be screened on Monday, March 15 at the Palm and Downtown Cinemas in San Luis Obispo. See details below.

CCFS JURY

Muara C. Johnston (Jury Coordinator) is a producing graduate from the MFA program at the American Film Institute Conservatory. At AFI, she was the winner of the prestigious Foreign Press Association Scholarship, wrote and/or produced 10 films, three of which went on to win over 30 national and international film festivals. Muara continues to write screenplays and is currently the assistant director at the San Luis Obispo Art Center.

Kenny Navran, a resident of West Hollywood for more than 20 years, is an accomplished writer, photographer and musician. A graduate of the Peabody Institute School of Music in Baltimore, Kenny studied screenwriting at UCLA. He has written feature-length and short films and is currently developing projects for both film and television.

Dennis Skotak is a Visual Effects specialist for major motion pictures. Working with his brother Bob Skotak, they have won three Oscars for ALIENS, TERMINATOR TWO: JUDGEMENT DAY and THE ABYSS. Dennis is known for his work as a DP for miniature set photography and most recently was recognized with an Oscar nomination for BATMAN RETURNS. He and his brother are frequent collaborators with James Cameron, Stan Winston and Ron Underwood.

DC (Dorothy) Fontana began her career writing for serial television in the 1960’s. After becoming an assistant to Gene Roddenberry, she was instrumental in the development and writing of 30 episodes of the original STAR TREK. Dorothy has been honored with the prestigious Morgan Cox Award from the Writers Guild of America, served on the Board of the WGA several times over the last twenty years and received the American Screenwriters Association, Hall of Fame Award. She is currently working on new media storytelling and is a professor of screenwriting at the AFI Conservatory.

Aquarius of Heart - Directed by Patrick Lawler
In this surreal silent film, a lone traveler finds a mysterious necklace that will entice his deepest desires. 3 min.

Our Vines Have Tender Grapes - Directed by David Baumgarten
This sentimental documentary is a memoir of Folksinger/storyteller/writer David Baumgarten's encounter with child movie star, Margaret O'Brien. 29 min.

SLO: The Stigma - Directed by Alec Ramsey
This documentary highlights four individuals in SLO county living with mental illnesses and tells the story of their journeys from isolation into recovery. Out of competition. 15 min.

Dream Camp Wyoming - Directed by Zack Karper
Ten complex, emotionally, and behaviorally challenged young women from New Jersey State's system-of-care go on a privately funded 'Dream Camp' trip of a lifetime, to Big Horn, Wyoming. 35 min.

Lost and Found - Directed by Eric Rainey
A young girl makes up imaginary friends to cope with her sister not having any time for her. 11 min.

Moksha Youth - Directed by Sean Stromsoe
Teenage Boon meets Sati, a unconventionally beautiful ethnic girl, at his best friends party and quickly learns that love and truth are interdependent entities. 16 min.

Ella and the Astronaut - Directed by Harper Gloria-Graham and Rodrigo Ojeda-Beck
Ella and her "friend", Astronaut Henry, travel to the stars and beyond in this film about imagination and one girl’s escape from reality to a place of endless boundaries. 7 min.

Shaped - Directed by Walter Georis
Paying tribute to the men and women of the surf world in the 1960s, this film discovers the “heart” of surfboard shaping and where it’s history began. 58 min.

Pride 2009 - Directed by Joseph Michael Olesh
This artistic documentary highlights the 2009 PRIDE parade in San Francisco. Out of competition. 8 min.

The Lone Star Cowboy - Directed by Alexander Georgakis
It's 1957 and the Garrison family have moved into a new home. As they settle in their strange new environment, this story weaves together a poignant tale of dreams, loneliness, and the power of myth. 28 min.

The Bolt Who Screwed Christmas - Directed by John Wardlaw
Can Christmas be saved for the people of Screwville? The late Jonathan Harris (Lost In Space, A Bugs Life) joins his former TV co-stars Bill Mumy, Angela Cartwright and Marta Kristen in this screwy parody of 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas', for adults only! 7 min.

The Sandals – Summers, Songs, and Sidebars - Directed by Steve Gatlin
In the summer of 1959, two teenage boys in Southern California met for the first time and found a common interest in guitars and music. Their group, ‘The Sandals’ helped define a new genre of instrumental music over the years, now known as 'Surf Rock.' 43 min.

Flip, Flop, Fly - Directed by Barry Goyette
Two women compete for the attentions of a surly, sexually manipulative man. An exciting blend of cinema and physical theatre, this film features three local dancers: Drew Silvaggio, Nellie Salisbury and Helene Dinsmore. 11 min. (This short screens with BREATH MADE VISIBLE, a feature about the life of dance pioneer, Anna Halprin)
